Whatever our political inclinations,
we have seen this week that the IMPOSSIBLE is POSSIBLE.
Wahe Guru.

To bring that inspiring energy of making the impossible possible into your life even more,
we recommend the Ganesha meditation to remove obstacles.

This meditation combines the sounds of the mantra “Sat Nam,” I am truth, with the sounds of the healing mantra,
Ra Ma Da Sa Sa Say So Hung. Sing as in Kirtan Kriya or chant in monotone.

Four cycles with the thumb tips pressing the
Index fingers                Long fingers                  Ring fingers                   Little fingers
Sa                                Ta                                Na                               Ma
Ra                                Ma                               Da                                Sa
Sa                                Say                              So                                Hung
Eyes one-tenth open, focused at tip of nose, backs of wrists on knees. 11-31 minutes.
To end, inhale, hold breath 20-30 seconds, and shake every part of body. Repeat two additional times.
End with one minute of silence and stillness, eyes one-tenth open and focused at tip of nose.

Helena Raghubir writes a message to you in closing
My dear friends and colleagues. Blessings to you in these changing times.

I am thinking often of my father lately, one of the great influences of my life.
He is a pediatrician and spent his life helping children with birth defects, epilepsy,
and traumatic brain injuries. He worked to help the kids’ families, too, and since
he worked with indigent populations, he was often helping families manage
issues such as poverty so dire that they didn’t have a phone to call the hospital
to schedule appointments. It’s a whole different ball game than working in an
affluent suburban clinic, and with very different solutions.

Dad is mostly retired now, but still works as researcher and is called as an
expert witness for the prosecution in child abuse cases. I have to be honest
that I cannot imagine the strength it would take to stand in the witness box
for that kind of testimony, even once.

I see greatness of character, ethics, and accomplishment in my father.
I think one of the things that contributed to his greatness was his Quaker
education. Quakers believed in reaching out to those perceived as the enemy.
So in the years following World War II, my father’s community in Baltimore
encouraged their kids to have pen pals in Germany.

When you think back to the 1940s, if you lived through those years or studied them,
you remember that Germans were absolutely demonized by the press, by the American
cultural climate, and by politicians. Germans were seen as the worst extremists, similar
to the devils created by our current press, political climate, and politicians. This view was
not limited to those who participated in or knew about the horrifying political atrocities committed on
German soil but was extended to all people who happened to have German nationality. I’ll leave it
to you to draw your own parallels in today’s world. We certainly have created many
public distortions of perception in the last few years.

But the Quakers looked at individual German people as human beings who needed Friends,
and helped their children to connect with individual German Jewish and Christian children.

The 1940s were not an easy time to be a German. The country was ravaged by two world
wars, and many people were starving. An appalling number had died in the Holocaust and many
were trying to recover from staggering losses of family members. Larger cities were in ruins,
some of which in the east would not be fully repaired until the 1990s or even later.
Much German trade was stagnant, so resources were limited.
I remember a German friend born in Nuremberg in the mid-1940s telling me that she did not
know what a banana was until the 1960s, when she saw an American soldier eating one at a military base.

My father had a pen pal from Berlin in the 1940s and ’50s, Klaus, to whom he sent letters,
care packages, and clothing. Klaus was a little smaller than Dad, so we have endearing
photos of my father wearing a winter jacket one year, and Klaus wearing it the next.
Chocolate was a rare and celebrated treat for Klaus to receive from America, too.

Klaus and my dad then lost touch, but their mothers stayed in sporadic communication
until my grandmother died in the year I was born. Klaus and my father reconnected in the
late 1980s and still write to each other now, in their seventies, sharing updates on health
and news of the children and grandchildren. They have met in person in Germany and in the
United States several times over the last two decades.

An enemy became a life-long connection of friendship.

Most of us have our enemies. Who is the enemy to you? Is it someone who votes differently?
Manages work differently? Perceives you differently than you would like to be seen?
Takes a role in your family that you don’t like? Practices a different religion?
Even someone who approaches yoga differently?

Sometimes, we feel justified in having enemies and loudly proclaim things like,
“I can’t believe anyone would be so stupid as to want that person in office!”
Sometimes, our enemies are our secret perceptions. We can barely admit to ourselves,
clandestinely, that we mistrust people of a certain race or background.
But whoever our enemies are, we can change the relationship by changing our behavior.

I invite you to reach out to someone from your enemy group this week as a Friend.
Who knows, it might even make you Great.

And please vote on Tuesday, November 4. The Center for Happiness is a non-partisan
organization, but we strongly support your right to representation and to the democratic
process. If you are an employer, consider giving your employees flex time on Tuesday
to get to the polls (and go early yourself as an example!). If you have an elderly person,
first-time voter, or handicapped person in your family or acquaintance, connect with him/her
over the weekend to be sure s/he knows where to go to vote and has transportation.

Blessings to you, and remember that you are all welcome at the Center for Happiness.

Erika Peterson is a Certified Kundalini Yoga Teacher, holds a BA in Communications, is pursing a MS in Psychology and has worked in marketing and communications for over 10 years. “I started practicing Sivananda Yoga in 2000 and was immediately taken by yoga’s healing power. Several years later, I accompanied a friend with advanced brain cancer to a series of Hatha Yoga classes at Gilda’s Club Chicago and began to understand yoga’s impact on a much grander scale. Yoga has the capacity to offer unconditional grace, compassion and love to the mind, body and spirit. In 2006, I had the privilege of taking the Kundalini Yoga Advanced Training Program. Kundalini Yoga’s precision, dynamism and adaptability make for the perfect yoga experience - no matter the age or life stage. It is an honor and privilege to share the healing power of this sacred science with individuals living with cancer in the Twin Cities.”
